The New MacBook Air vs. old Macbook and a $20 Discount

MacBook Air

Well a great deal has already been written about the new MacBook Air and since I was an early adopter of the first generation Air, here are a few thoughts. If you are thinking of buying one, go to Amazon and save on the Apple store price... hey it all adds up! For the 13.3" click here for 256Gb storage and here for 128Gb.  For the 11" click here for the 128Gb storage and here for the 64Gb. You get up to $20 discount compared to the Apple store depending on which model you buy.

The original Air suffered from two major problems: Overheating and poor graphics performance.  In fact the two problems are connected because the harder the computer worked to display graphics, the hotter it got.  So Apple's solution to the problem was to slow down the processor when it got stressed.  The good news is that it helped.  The bad news is that it slowed down the computer.  The bad news is that Apple's algorithm for solving the problem sucked.  The good news is that a Swedish guy sold something called Coolbook which provided a far superior solution to the problem.  Without Coolbook, I would have thrown my Air through the window a long time ago.

So apart from an even cooler design (no pun intended) the new Air has the following:

  • Bigger disks.
  • Solid state disks which mean cooler running, fewer technical problems (no moving parts) and instant-on.
  • Faster performance.  At least one benchmark shows performance equal to or exceeding the MacBook Pro 13".
  • 2 USB ports (finally!)
  • An SD memory card slot (only in the 13" model)
  • Higher resolution screen
  • Lower price (maybe this one should have been first!)
  • Longer battery life
On the downside, Apple have taken away the backlit keyboard and its still pricey, but more and more people are getting the fact that working on a Mac is far more productive than PC/Windows and that the time saved makes it worth every extra penny.

So for a small but still worthwhile discount, if you are thinking of buying an Air, for the 13.3" click here for 256Gb storage and here for 128Gb.  For the 11" click here for the 128Gb storage and here for the 64Gb. You get up to $20 discount compared to the Apple store depending on which model you buy.
